The promotion ceremony and handing over the duties of the Chief of Navy was held at Wisma Pertahanan Auditorium today. Vice Admiral Datuk Abdul Rahman bin Ayob has been promoted to the rank of Admiral and at the same time appointed as the 18th Navy Chief, replacing Admiral Tan Sri Mohd Reza bin Mohd Sany who will retire.
The appointment of Admiral Datuk Abdul Rahman as Chief of Navy has made him the first submarine officer to hold the reins of RMN.
The ceremony was officiated by the Chief of Defence Force, General Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Hj Affendi bin Buang TUDM and the Secretary General of the Ministry of Defence, Dato’ Sri Muez bin Abd Aziz. Also present were the top management of the Ministry of Defence and the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF).
Among the positions he has held throughout his service include Commander of the Submarine Force, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Philippine Mindanao International Monitoring Team, Commander of Naval Region 2, and Commander of the Eastern Fleet and Deputy Chief of Navy in 2019.
His career as a Submariner began in 1993 when he obtained the submarine expertise badge after completing submarine training at HMAS PLATYPUS, Australia. Admiral Datuk Abdul Rahman went on to undergo Submarine Introduction Training in Sweden in 1995 and in France in 1999 and successfully completed the AGOSTA Class Submarine Basic Course in 2006 in France.
In the field of sports, Admiral Datuk Abdul Rahman is active in tennis and golf. He has represented RMN in the Inter-Services Games in 2022 and the RMN tennis team emerged as champions at the tournament.
RMN expressed its appreciation to Admiral Tan Sri Mohd Reza throughout his 42 years of service, especially when he held the position of Chief of Navy since 30 November 2018. Admiral Tan Sri Mohd Reza has continued to modernize the RMN fleet despite going through various challenges, especially when the country affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Admiral Tan Sri Mohd Reza and the top management of RMN and MAF are determined to find a solution so that RMN’s level of readiness continues to be at an optimal level and able to bear the trust of defending Malaysia’s maritime sovereignty.

Majlis pemakaian pangkat dan serah terima tugas Panglima Tentera Laut telah diadakan di Auditorium Wisma Pertahanan hari ini. Laksamana Madya Datuk Abdul Rahman bin Ayob telah dinaikkan ke pangkat Laksamana dan sekaligus dilantik sebagai Panglima Tentera Laut Ke-18 menggantikan Laksamana Tan Sri Mohd Reza bin Mohd Sany yang akan bersara.
Pelantikan Laksamana Datuk Abdul Rahman sebagai Panglima Tentera Laut telah menjadikan beliau sebagai pegawai submariner pertama yang memegang tampuk pemerintahan TLDM.
Majlis tersebut telah disempurnakan Panglima Angkatan Tentera, Jeneral Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Hj Affendi bin Buang TUDM dan Ketua Setiausaha Kementerian Pertahanan, Dato’ Sri Muez bin Abd Aziz. Turut hadir barisan pengurusan tertinggi Kementerian Pertahanan dan Angkatan Tentera Malaysia (ATM).
Antara jawatan yang pernah dipegang sepanjang perkhidmatannya termasuk Komander Angkatan Kapal Selam, Timbalan Ketua Misi Tim Pemantau Antarabangsa Mindanao Filipina, Panglima Wilayah Laut 2, dan Panglima Armada Timur dan Timbalan Panglima Tentera Laut pada 2019.
Kerjaya beliau sebagai seorang Submariner bermula pada tahun 1993 apabila memperolehi lencana kepakaran kapal selam setelah menamatkan latihan kapal selam di HMAS PLATYPUS, Australia. Laksamana Datuk Abdul Rahman seterusnya menjalani Latihan Pengenalan Kapal Selam di Sweden pada tahun 1995 dan di Perancis pada 1999 serta berjaya menamatkan Kursus Asas Kapal Selam Kelas AGOSTA pada tahun 2006 di Perancis.
Dalam bidang sukan, Laksamana Datuk Abdul Rahman aktif dalam sukan tenis dan golf. Beliau telah mewakili TLDM dalam Sukan Antara Perkhidmatan pada tahun 2022 dan pasukan tenis TLDM muncul juara pada kejohanan tersebut.
TLDM mengucapkan penghargaan kepada Laksamana Tan Sri Mohd Reza sepanjang perkhidmatan beliau selama 42 tahun, terutamanya ketika memegang jawatan Panglima Tentera Laut sejak 30 November 2018. Laksamana Tan Sri Mohd Reza telah meneruskan usaha memodenkan armada TLDM walaupun menempuh pelbagai cabaran, lebih-lebih lagi apabila negara terkesan dengan pandemik COVID-19.
Namun, Laksamana Tan Sri Mohd Reza dan pihak pengurusan tertinggi TLDM dan ATM cekal mencari penyelesaian agar tahap kesiapsiagaan TLDM terus berada di tahap yang optimum dan berupaya untuk menggalas amanah mempertahankan kedaulatan maritim Malaysia.
