Malaysian Armed Forces Embrace Cyber Expertise: Recruiting Hackers to Strengthen Defence

On 14th  February, the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) revealed plans to enlist computer hackers as part of a strategic move to enhance the nation’s defence capabilities. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin emphasized the focus on addressing non-traditional threats, including cyber security, digital threats, and electromagnetic defense.

Nordin stated that the future military personnel pool might include skilled individuals from the realm of e-sports, acknowledging the relevance of their expertise. He highlighted the increasing significance of cyber warfare, noting that countries like Singapore have already incorporated hacker units as the fourth pillar in their military service system.

During a press conference following the Kick-Off Launch of the Half-Term Defence White Paper Study, Nordin elaborated on the potential benefits of such a unit. In addition to strengthening the defense against cyber threats, he emphasized the importance of monitoring and controlling the country’s waters and borders to counter smuggling threats, particularly those involving drones.

Addressing the evolution of modern warfare, Nordin stressed the need for Malaysia to embrace advanced technology, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), big data, and digitization within the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and the MAF. He expressed the belief that such a strategic approach would likely become the standard for military forces in recruiting new members.
