Singapore and Malaysia Reaffirm Defence Relations Amidst COVID-19

VIDEO CONFERENCE CALL BETWEEN YB DATO’ SRI ISMAIL SABRI BIN YAAKOB, SENIOR MINISTER OF DEFENCE MALAYSIA AND HIS EXCELLENCY DR NG ENG HEN, MINISTER FOR DEFENCE OF THE REPUBLIC OF SINGAPORE

YB Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri bin Yaakob, Senior Minister of Defence Malaysia held a video conference call with His Excellency Dr Ng Eng Hen, Minister for Defence of the Republic of Singapore on 27 April 2021.

During the conference call, both Ministers emphasised their commitments towards maintaining bilateral defence cooperation and underscored the importance of multilateral cooperation under the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) and the Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA).

They looked forward to Malaysia’s hosting of the 11th FPDA Defence Ministers’ Meeting (FDMM) which also coincides with FPDA’s 50th Anniversary. They also acknowledged the importance of continuous active engagements through the conduct of exercises such as BERSAMA LIMA 21 and SUMAN WARRIOR 21.

Their discussion also focused on matters related to the dynamics of regional security environments including the South China Sea. YB Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri highlighted the need for non-militarisation and self-restraint in the South China Sea to ensure peace, security and stability in the region. In addressing common security threats, both Ministers also emphasised on strengthening cooperation in cyber security and information sharing between the two armed forces.
