The XM8 was an assault rifle system from the late 1990s to the early 2000s.

The weapon was designed by German weapons manufacturer, Heckler & Koch (H&K), and shared the design and engineering with their G36 weapon. The XM8’s design was initially part of the Objective Individual Combat Weapon program (OICW), which developed a “smart” grenade launcher system with a bottom carbine weapon. After that, the two parts of OICW were separated, producing the XM8 and XM25 projects.

Although the XM8 was considered by the U.S. Army a potential standard infantry weapon, to replace the M4 carbine, the project was postponed in April 2005, and officially canceled on October 31 of that year. The weapon was used by the Royal Malaysian Navy for the PASKAL special forces.

The Malaysian Armed Forces expressed interest in using the weapon and in 2007 publicly stated its intention to purchase the XM8. By 2010, the Royal Malaysian Navy’s PASKAL special unit began using the XM8 along with other Heckler & Koch weapons including the HK416 and GG36

Selepas itu, dua bahagian OICW dipisahkan, menghasilkan projek XM8 dan XM25.Walaupun XM8 dianggap oleh Angkatan Darat Amerika Syarikat sebagai senjata infanteri standard yang berpotensi, untuk menggantikan M4 carbine, projek ini ditangguhkan pada bulan April 2005, dan dibatalkan secara rasmi pada 31 Oktober tahun itu.

Senjata itu diguna pakai oleh Tentera Laut Diraja Malaysia untuk pasukan khas PASKAL.

Angkatan Tentera Malaysia menyatakan minat untuk menggunakan senjata itu dan pada tahun 2007 secara terbuka menyatakan niatnya untuk membeli XM8. Menjelang tahun 2010, unit khas Tentera Laut Diraja Malaysia PASKAL mula menggunakan XM8 bersama dengan senjata Heckler & Koch lain termasuk HK416 dan GG36
