KUALA LUMPUR, 4 Apr – Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today confirmed that the Petronas company will continue to carry out oil exploration work in the existing area in the South China Sea.

However, he stated that the matter is still open for negotiation if China feels that the area in question is their territory.

Anwar said that he mentioned the matter to the President of China, Xi Jinping and his counterpart, Li Qiang during his visit to Beijing, recently.

“Indeed this matter was raised because there are overlapping claims by both sides in the South China Sea,

“This is especially China’s concern because Petronas is carrying out large-scale activities in an area claimed by China,

“I stated myself to the President and Prime Minister of China, that Malaysia considers this to be Malaysian territory, so Petronas will continue to explore in that area,

“However, if China feels this is their right, we can open for negotiations,” he said while answering additional questions from Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan in the Dewan Rakyat, today.
