Celebrating General Affendi Buang’s Distinguished Service and Leadership in the Malaysian Armed Forces

In an official ceremony, General Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Haji Affendi bin Buang of the Royal Malaysian Air Force has handed over the leadership of the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) after four decades of service to the nation to General Tan Sri Datuk Seri Mohammad bin Ab Rahman, the 29th Malaysian Chief of Army. The handover ceremony was witnessed by the Honorable Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Hasan, the Malaysian Minister of Defence.

During his distinguished career, General Tan Sri Datuk Seri Mohammad bin Ab Rahman held various key positions and received training both domestically and internationally, including in New Zealand and Australia. He also holds a degree in Defense Studies from the University of Canberra and a Master’s in Social Science (Defense Studies) from the National University of Malaysia.

General Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Haji Affendi bin Buang, the outgoing 21st Malaysian Chief of Defence Force (CDF), has a remarkable career that began in the Royal Malaysian Air Force. He became the first Sarawakian to hold the position of CDF.

Throughout his career, General Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Haji Affendi bin Buang actively participated in various air operations within Malaysia, including counterinsurgency efforts, patrolling maritime zones, and safeguarding national airspace. He was also instrumental in establishing the RMAF MiG-29 tactical aerobatic team known as “Smokey Bandit.”

Both generals have received numerous awards and recognitions for their dedication and contributions to the nation, including the Panglima Gagah Angkatan Tentera and Panglima Mangku Negara titles.

The transition ceremony also saw the appointment of the 26th Deputy Chief of Army, Lieutenant General Datuk Muhammad Hafizuddeain bin Jantan, and the 30th Malaysian Chief of Army, General Datuk Muhammad Hafizuddeain bin Jantan.

General Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Haji Affendi bin Buang’s tenure included significant challenges, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he played a crucial role in coordinating defense efforts to combat the virus and ensure the safety and well-being of the nation.

These two generals have not only served their country diligently but have also been recognized internationally for their contributions to regional military cooperation and peace.
