Malaysian Defence Minister Enhances Defence Cooperation on Official Trip to Vietnam

HANOI, 4 December 2023 – The Minister of Defence, YB Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad Bin Haji Hasan, conducted a Working Visit to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on 4 and 5 December, 2023, upon the invitation of his counterpart, TYT General Phan Van Giang, Minister of Defence of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The visit aimed to discuss measures to enhance defence cooperation between the two nations.

Both Ministers emphasized the importance of regional stability, expressing the commitment of Malaysia and Vietnam to strengthen their defence capabilities. Discussions covered various aspects of military cooperation, including joint exercises, intelligence sharing, and collaboration in defence technology.


The meeting also sought to renew the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Defence Cooperation, as the previous agreement had expired in 2018. Both Ministers affirmed their commitment to implementing the provisions of the MoU, ensuring the success of strengthening bilateral defence relations.

Simultaneously, YB Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad Bin Haji Hasan paid a Courtesy Call to TYT Pham Minh Chinch, the Prime Minister of Vietnam. Discussions between the Malaysian Defence Minister and the Vietnamese Prime Minister focused on the mutual interests of both countries, with particular attention to maritime security.

Accompanying the Defence Minister during this Working Visit were the Malaysian Ambassador to Vietnam, TYT Dato’ Tan Yang Thai, and the Deputy Secretary-General (Policy), YBrs Tuan Mohd Yani bin Daud.

Vietnam, 4 Disember 2023 – Menteri Pertahanan, YB Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad Bin Haji Hasan telah mengadakan Lawatan Kerja ke Republik Sosialis Vietnam pada 4 dan 5 Disember 2023 atas jemputan rakan sejawatannya, TYT Jeneral Phan Van Giang, Menteri Pertahanan Negara Republik Sosialis Vietnam, untuk membincangkan langkah untuk meningkatkan kerjasama pertahanan antara kedua-dua negara.

Kedua-dua Menteri menekankan kepentingan kestabilan serantau dan menyatakan komitmen Malaysia-Vietnam untuk meningkatkan keupayaan pertahanan selain turut membincangkan mengenai pelbagai aspek kerjasama ketenteraan, termasuk latihan bersama, perkongsian perisikan dan kerjasama dalam teknologi pertahanan.

Pertemuan ini juga bertujuan bagi memperbaharui Memorandum Persefahaman (MoU) mengenai kerjasama dalam bidang Pertahanan di mana perjanjian MoU yang dimeterai sebelum ini telah tamat pada 2018. Kedua-dua Menteri menyatakan komitmen mereka untuk melaksanakan perundangan yang termaktub dalam MoU tersebut dan memastikan kejayaan dalam memperkukuh hubungan pertahanan dua hala.

Dalam pada masa yang sama, YB Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan turut mengadakan Kunjungan Hormat kepada TYT Pham Minh Chinch, Perdana Menteri Vietnam. Menteri Pertahanan Malaysia dan Perdana Menteri Vietnam telah membincangkan mengenai kepentingan kedua-dua negara dan memberi tumpuan terhadap keselamatan maritim.

Turut mengiringi Menteri Pertahanan sepanjang Lawatan Kerja ini adalah Duta Besar Malaysia di Vietnam, TYT Dato’ Tan Yang Thai dan Timbalan Ketua Setiausaha (Dasar), YBrs Tuan Mohd Yani bin Daud.
