Malaysian Army Personnel Fatally Shot During Exercise PASAK BUMI (EPB) by the 3rd Battalion Royal Ranger Regiment (RRR) in Sarawak Ops & Training 23rd September 20248th October 2024 The Public Relations Office of the Malaysian Army would like to issue an official statement as follows: Referring to a statement by the Sarawak Police Commissioner on the TVS social media platform, the Malaysian Army confirms the death of a personnel from the 9th Brigade formation, Sibu, who was shot by an unidentified individual on 23rd September 2024. At the time of the incident, the personnel was carrying out training exercises in Song, Sarawak from 21st to 29th September 2024, covering areas from Kanowit – Nanga Dap – Song and involving a company-sized contingent. On 23rd September 2024 (the second day of training) at around 2:45 AM, while resting (bivouac), the platoon heard the sound of a motorcycle passing through a dirt road near their resting location. Suddenly, gunshots, believed to have come from the direction of the motorcycle, were heard. Upon hearing the shots, a perimeter search was conducted, and it was found that one personnel had been injured by the gunfire. The injured personnel received initial treatment on-site before being rushed to the Song Health Clinic at 4:00 AM. He was later referred to Kapit Hospital for further treatment at around 5:00 AM. However, it is with great sadness that we confirm the personnel passed away at 7:43 AM at Kapit Hospital due to the injuries sustained. A police report has been lodged, and the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) is conducting an investigation. The public is urged not to spread any images or information regarding this incident. Please allow the authorities to complete their investigation, and respect the grieving family and next of kin. Funeral arrangements will be finalized once the post-mortem process is completed. The next of kin, residing in Sarikei, Sarawak, has been informed, and the burial location will be communicated later.
