UiTM Cadet’s Death Sparks Outrage: Allegations of Abuse and Negligence During Training

A tragic incident has left the nation in shock after Muhammad Amir Rusyaidi Muhammad Zaidi, a 25-year-old cadet in UiTM’s Reserve Officer Training Unit (Rotu), died on November 13, allegedly due to mistreatment during a training session.

Allegations of Physical Abuse and Unscheduled Training

Amir’s father, Muhammad Zaidi Abdul Rahman, lodged a police report detailing the alleged physical abuse his son endured on November 10. Reports claim Amir was forced to perform grueling tasks, including being stepped on the chest, mimicking horse movements with a trainer riding on his back, and jumping like a kangaroo. The ordeal was reportedly recorded by the trainer involved.

Amir collapsed during the session and fell into a coma, ultimately passing away three days later.

Heatstroke and Negligence in Medical Response

The family’s lawyer, Nurul Diyana Bashir, confirmed Amir’s death was caused by heatstroke. Witnesses alleged Amir was left exposed to the sun for 30 minutes before receiving medical attention. Instead of calling an ambulance, the trainer reportedly transported Amir to a hospital in a private vehicle, bypassing the closer UiTM medical center.

Zaidi also claimed the family and university were not informed of Amir’s critical condition. Shockingly, on November 11, the trainer allegedly called the family, insisting Amir attend class, despite his deteriorated state. The trainer reportedly informed UiTM of the incident only after being admonished by Amir’s family.

Family Demands Justice and Accountability

The family and their lawyer believe the trainer’s negligence and harsh treatment contributed to Amir’s untimely death. They are calling for a full investigation and accountability from those responsible.

Authorities Respond

Shah Alam district police chief Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim confirmed that the case is being investigated as a sudden death. Meanwhile, UiTM Rotu Deputy Commandant Ariff Md Ab Malik urged the armed forces to conduct a comprehensive review.

Ariff emphasized the need for a thorough investigation, including examining candidate recruitment processes and ensuring training protocols adhere to established procedures.

Public Outcry for Safer Training Standards

This heartbreaking incident has raised questions about safety and oversight in the UiTM Rotu program. The public and advocacy groups are demanding stricter regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
