The death of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) cadet Muhammad Amir Rusyaidi Muhammad Zaidi on November 13 has sparked new controversy, as a trainer from the university’s Reserve Officer Training Unit (Rotu) claims he is being unfairly targeted as a scapegoat.

Trainer Denounces Investigation and Allegations

The 30-year-old corporal told Malaysiakini that he overheard discussions about needing a “scapegoat” to close the case and believes he has been singled out. The trainer stated that during the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) investigation, he was the only individual interrogated, with no indication of other trainers or cadets being questioned.

“I’ve always followed orders, whether verbal or written. Yet now, it feels like I am being held solely responsible for what happened,” he lamented.

The trainer revealed that he faced intense questioning during the MAF probe, with 108 questions primarily related to alleged criminal actions. He also criticized the investigators for pressuring him to address issues he was advised by police not to discuss.

Details of the Incident and Cause of Death

Amir, a 25-year-old cadet, died following a training session on November 10, which allegedly involved physical abuse, including being stomped on the chest, forced to mimic a horse while being ridden, and jumping like a kangaroo. The Selangor police chief confirmed the cause of death as “heatstroke with multi-organ failure.”

Despite the police advising the trainer not to address criminal allegations, he claims the MAF continued to push him for answers beyond their jurisdiction.

Trainer Faces Public Scrutiny and Personal Pressure

The trainer expressed frustration with UiTM’s handling of the case, alleging that some staff compared the incident to prior bullying cases at the National Defence University of Malaysia. He maintained that Amir’s case was not an instance of abuse or bullying.

Additionally, the corporal claimed he has been transferred multiple times since the incident and faces ongoing public backlash, particularly from social media users who revealed his name and image.

Family and Legal Action

Amir’s father has accused the trainer of negligence and mistreatment, which allegedly led to his son’s death. He filed a police report following the tragedy, amplifying calls for justice and a thorough investigation.

Authorities’ Response

The Selangor police have completed their investigation and forwarded the case to the coroner’s court for an inquest. Meanwhile, the MAF’s internal inquiry continues, with public and media attention demanding accountability.
