Exercise Thunderstorm in Johor: Explosives, Roadblocks, and Helicopters as Special Forces Train for Terror Threats

KUALA LUMPUR – The 21st Special Forces Group (GGK) will conduct a joint military exercise with the Johor Military Force (JMF) from 1 to 13 May 2025 across several locations in Johor.

In a statement, the Malaysian Army (TDM) announced that Exercise Thunderstorm Series 1/2025 will be held in the areas of Pengerang, Tanjung Pengelih, Teluk Ramunia, and Desaru.

“The exercise will involve the deployment of various military assets, movements of tactical vehicles, helicopter flights, and the use of explosive elements,” the statement said.

TDM advised local residents and road users not to be alarmed and to adhere to all safety instructions issued throughout the exercise period.

To support the exercise, roadblocks and traffic control measures will be implemented in collaboration with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) at several designated locations, particularly around Teluk Ramunia from 1 to 9 May.

Additional roadblocks are scheduled for 10 May in the vicinity of the Sungai Johor Bridge and Desaru Coast Ferry Terminal, followed by a temporary road closure on Highway E22 between 1:00 AM and 3:00 AM on 11 May.

According to TDM, the exercise forms part of the Army’s ongoing commitment to maintaining operational readiness in the face of any potential terrorist threats to national sovereignty.

The public is also reminded not to circulate unverified information related to the exercise.
